Keystone Custom Decks

Keeping Customers Happy for Over 40 Years

Keystone Custom Decks specializes in making their clients’ outdoor living space dreams a reality. Founded over 40 years ago by Amos Esh, the company initially focused on building decks in the Philadelphia area out of their headquarters in East Earl, Pennsylvania.

Amos’s son and Partner at Keystone Custom Decks, Michael Esh, recalls his father would spend his evenings working on quotes and blueprints by hand then build the decks with help from his brother during the day. Years later, as Michael and his own three brothers got older, they would tag along in the summers to help out and learn the trade.

Since then, the company has expanded to serve more of Pennsylvania and now New York out of an office location in Keuka Park, NY. The services provided to their clients have expanded along the way as well.

We are equipped and can put the pieces in place…Our team is very focused throughout the entire project.

Michael Esh, Partner, Keystone Deck Builders

What started as a deck building company 40 years ago now designs, builds, and manages every component of creating outdoor living spaces, from outdoor kitchens and stone fireplaces to porches and patios. Pools were the latest exciting addition to their offerings.

According to Michael, the company’s evolution from deck building to full-scale backyard oases was natural: “We would see the pain points customers had in dealing with other contractors and vendors, so we’d focus on those issues and essentially do the opposite, with customer service and communication a priority throughout the entire project through completion.” (In one memorable example, Keystone custom-built retractable flooring over a pool after other vendors wrote it off as not doable.)

Synergies were already in place to expand their offerings. The company has its own plumbing, masonry, and electrical contractors—even an excavation team—so the overlap creates value for customers. Michael adds, “We are equipped and can put the pieces in place. Rather than have us come through after a pool is installed, or try and plan for a future pool, we can design it all at once. Our team is very focused throughout the entire project.”

On that point, the company even creates 3D virtual environments so their customers can literally “walk” through the finished product well before the first shovel hits the dirt.

It’s the team though, as Michael is quick to point out, that is critical to Keystone’s success from the beginning: “My dad always made sure customers were happy. If he had to go back and take losses to make things right, that was OK. That’s the same commitment the team shares today and what drives our business.”

Though Keystone doesn’t have “typical” projects, clients seek out their expertise, problem-solving skills, and one-stop-shop service for high-end outdoor projects across Pennsylvania and New York. Many of these projects incorporate Acurio Lattice, prized by Keystone for our product quality, design options, and elegance. According to Michel, his clients love using Acurio for deck skirting and privacy fencing, particularly when it creates inconspicuous storage space beneath decks.
